RBS Concrete is the Greater Toronto Area’s specialists in ready-mix concrete delivery. Ready-mix concrete may seem straightforward – most of us come in contact with it every day without giving it a second thought – but there is actually a lot that goes into formulating, curing and setting this building material. And, with variables always come questions. So, we’ve created this FAQ page to answer some of the most common questions we receive about ready-mix concrete and our delivery service.
If you have a question for the RBS Concrete team that isn’t covered on this page, contact us by phone or email and we’ll get back to you with an answer.
Q: Who do you deliver ready-mix concrete for?
A: RBS Concrete delivers ready-mix concrete for commercial, residential and municipal customers across the Greater Toronto Area.
Q: In what types of projects can ready-mix concrete be used?
A: Ready-mix concrete is one of the most versatile building materials. RBS Concrete delivers ready-mix concrete for use in the construction of plazas, walls, footings, parking lots, commercial flooring, as well as residential projects, such as driveways, walkways, walls, wells, garage floors, patios and many other applications. RBS Concrete also supplies unshrinkable backfill ("U-Fill") for utility companies completing road repairs.
Q: How much concrete will I need?
A: If you need a ready-mix concrete delivered for your project, call RBS Concrete for an initial consultation to discuss the project’s details. During the call, we will ask that you provide measurements of your project area in square metres or feet. These measurements give us the information we need to give you an accurate estimate on the volume of ready-mix needed and the delivery cost.
Q: What areas do you deliver to?
A: RBS Concrete delivers ready-mix for residential, commercial and municipal customers throughout the Greater Toronto Area, including Toronto, Milton, Brampton, Vaughn, Oakville, Scarborough, Mississauga, Richmond Hill and Woodbridge. Give us a call if you’re unsure whether your project is in our delivery zone.
Q: What type of ready-mix concrete will I need?
A: Different concrete projects call for different concrete mixes. For example, you wouldn’t want to use the same type of concrete for a road repair as you would for a patio. Different types of concrete offer varying strengths and weight loads, as well as different setting and shrinkage behaviours. We would be happy to discuss the type of concrete that will work best for your project.
Q: How can I prepare for my ready-mix concrete delivery?
A: Once we have determined the amount and type of concrete your project requires, we will set your delivery date and time. RBS Concrete always delivers on-time, so we ask that you ensure that the delivery area is clear of any obstructions that could limit access to your work site. This will ensure a flawless delivery.
Q: What are your delivery hours?
A: We offer delivery with a 24-hour notice on the following days:
Monday to Friday: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Saturday: 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM
After-hours and Sundays: Call 416-684-0422
Please note: After-hours deliveries may affect your delivery rate. Call RBS Concrete for additional information.
Q: Concrete and cement — what's the difference?
A: The words cement and concrete are often used interchangeably, but these are in fact two separate materials. While concrete uses cement as one of its main ingredients, cement in itself is a very fine powder that becomes a hard, binding material when water is added. Concrete on the other hand, forms into a durable, nearly stone-like material once mixed with water and allowed to set.
Q: When should air-entrained concrete be used?
A: It’s the Great White North. So any ready-mix concrete that is going to be in freezing conditions or exposed to any type of de-icer ought to be air-entrained. The air-entraining process infuses the mix with tiny air pockets. These pockets allow the concrete to expand during freeze events.
Q: What strength of ready-mix should I use for my particular application?
A: Let’s break down some of the general situations in which ready-mix is commonly used, as well as the type of concrete in PSI (pounds per square inch):
Driveways — 4,000 PSI
Walkways — 3,500 – 4,000 PSI
Patios — 3,500 PSI
Garage floors — 3,500 PSI
Room additions — 3,000 – 3,500 PSI
Floors — 3,000 – 3,500 PSI
Porches — 3,000 – 3,500 PSI
Footings — 2,500 PSI
